October 31st – International Black Sea Action Day
International Black Sea Action Day has been marked on October 31st since 1996 when all six riverside countries – Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, The Russian Federation, Turkey and Ukraine have signed a pollution prevention plan. The Black Sea is almost completely separated from the planet’s oceans. Over the last years it has seen significant environment degradation mostly accounted for by coastal erosion, deficiencies in wastewater treatment, habitat loss and mismanagement.
As biological diversity has dramatically dropped, several NGOs and government institutions have decided to organize drawing competitions for children, conferences, seminaries, exhibitions and debates – all concerning the Black Sea and its problems – in the attempt to take action for better preservation.
