EESC president on a visit to Romania
The President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Henri Malosse starts a three-day visit to Romania on Wednesday. Mr. Malosse is expected to meet Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and representatives of the civil society – employer associations, trade unions, student groups, NGOs, media and bloggers. Talks will focus on issues concerning economic growth in such sectors as energy, industry and infrastructure as well as employment. The European official is also expected to assess the current competence of Romania’s Economic and Social Committee.
A resignation under House of Deputies’ debate
Romanian Parliaments’ lower house is expected to discuss the resignation of Markó Attila, a former deputy representing the opposition Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) on Wednesday. The House of Deputies is also expected to consider a recent request by the country’s anti-corruption watchdog concerning the preventive arrest of Mr. Markó for his alleged involvement in a corruption-related case. Markó Attila is facing three charges for abuse of office in a file concerning damages paid by the country’s National Authority for the Restitution of Property. Mr. Markó, a Romanian and Hungarian citizen, is curretly in Budapest after leaving Romania in December last year He sent his resignation electronically, a move rejected by House of Deputies’ speaker Valeriu Zgonea who dismissed the request. Markó Attila told the Hungarian Kossuth Radio that he was subject to persecution.
Romania at the 43rd edition of the International Exibition of Inventions in Geneva
The Swiss town of Geneva holds its annual International Exhibition of Inventions these days. More than 700 producers and inventors from more than 45 countries are expected to attend the event opening on Wednesday. The Romanian participation includes 25 projects. The 2013 Grand Prix of the 41st International Exhibition of Inventions went to the Romanian MB Telecom for „Roboscan 2M Aeria”, a system that scans planes. MB Telecom worked for more than four years on the project. It was actually the second time when the company won the Geneva Grand Prix. The award was received for the first time in 2009 for „Roboscan 1M”, an advanced system for X-raying trucks.
Valentin Gheorghiu and Gabriel Croitoru at the Romanian Radio’s Concert Hall
Romanian Radio’s Concert Hall will host the third concert of Beethoven’s sonatas for violine and piano on Monday, April 20. Audiences are invited to enjoy the next three sonatas of the cycle. The hugely acclaimed Valentin Gheorghiu (piano) and Gabriel Croitoru (violine) will perform Sonata #4 in A minor, Sonata #6 in A major and Sonata #10 in G major. Valentin Gheorghiu will test the new Steinway piano of the Concert Hall while Gabriel Croitoru will play the famous Guarnieri violine once belonging to Romania’s greatest musician George Enescu.
