Romania’s Presidency and Government „shocked” following terror atacks in Brussels

„If confirmed, the terror attacks in Brussels prove that terror is still in the heart of Europe”, Romanian President Klaus Johannis said in a statement on Tuesday. „Experts say terror attacks are likely. We are horrified and saddened, and we wish to express our whole sympathy and condolences to the grieving families of the victims”, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said in a statement on Tuesday. „We are extremely concerned and we are closely watching developments in Brussels”, President Iohannis added. The Romanian president made the satement while attending an event on the occasion of the International Day of Francophonie.
The government of Romania is „shocked and concerned about the serious situation” created by the explosions in Brussels, Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş said in a statement at his cabinet’s headquarters at Victoria Palace in the capital Bucharest. The prime minister said his government made every step to enforce the country’s home security. „The Romanian government strongly condemns such acts of violence while also expressing its support for the Belgian authorities and the EU in their efforts to ensure the security in Europe. Following the events, the government will remain constantly in touch with the Romanian community in Brussels through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Romania in the Belgian capital, Mr. Cioloş added.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said terrorists have committed murder at the airport and the metro station in Brussels on Tuesday morning. “What we feared, has happened,” Mr. Michel said in a televised press conference. By noon, official statements put the death toll at 26, with 136 wounded.

TVR managing board confirmed

The 13 members of Romanian Television’s managing board were confirmed at a joint session of both committees for cultural affairs in Romania’s Parliament on Tuesday. The new board of the Romanian public television, TVR, includes one presidential nominee and another nominee on behalf of the prime minister along with nominees of the left-wing Social Democratic Party (PSD – 3 nominees), right-wing National Liberal Party (PNL – 2 nominees) and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR), Alliance of Liberals ad Democrats (ALDE) and Romanian ethnic groups with one nominee each. The vote in the Senate and the House of Deputies is expected later on Tuesday. The mandate of the acting President – Director General of the TVR ends on March 23.

New acting director general at TAROM

Gabriel Stoe is the new acting Director General of TAROM, the Romanian national airliner. The move comes after both former TAROM chief Christian Edouard Heinzmann and his deputy Tiberiu Ţiclea were dismissed. Mr. Heinzmann, one of the first private managers to be appointed at the helm of a state owned enterprise, will end his mandate on March 22. Mr. Stoe has been TAROM’s chief financial executive

Radio Romania Cultural Awards 2016

The Odeon Theatre in the Romanian capital Bucharest hosted the 2016 edition of the Radio Romania Cultural Awards Ceremony on Monday. The three special awards of the edition went to historian Neagu Djuvara (Outstanding Achievement Award), visual artist Dan Perjovschi (Lux Mundi Award) and pianist Raluca Ştirbăţ (In Memoriam Iosif Sava Award). Winners also included Robert Şerban (Poetry Award), Antisocial Project team – a co-production between Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu and Sibiu :ucian Blaga University directed by Bogdan Georgescu (Theatre Award), Liviu Stoicoviciu (Fine Arts Award), Radu Jude for his film „Aferim!” (Film Award), Mircea Cărtărescu for his novel „Solenoid” (Literature Award), and others.
