Jens Stoltenberg – Klaus Johannis meeting at Cotroceni Palace
After meeting President Klaus Iohannis, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured that NATO will respond as before to any threat or aggressive action from Russia. President Klaus Iohannis and Secretary General insisted that the missile shield is not directed against Russia. Jens Stoltenberg explained that the shield is meant to protect against threats from outside the Euro-Atlantic space and NATO does not want a confrontation with Russia. NATO Secretary General added that it is clear that Russia is ready to use military force to redraw borders in Europe, as it did in Ukraine. Jens Stoltenberg also said that the Alliance is ready to increase its presence, if necessary, at its Eastern borders and mentioned that NATO will respond defensively and proportionate. NATO believes that there is no contradiction between a strong defense, a strong and predictable behavior of the Alliance and the attempt to have a dialogue with Russia. President Klaus Johannis explained that Russia’s actions make Romania to request an advanced presence of NATO forces, not with thousands of soldiers stationed there as during the Cold War but through more joint military exercises. Klaus Iohannis: „We want – and we proposed it – to have a standing naval presence in the Black Sea, which will definitely start with the riparian countries, meaning us, the Bulgarians and the Turks, but which in the long run can integrate with NATO’s approach to the southern part of the eastern flank”.
