Bucharest Day
Romania’s capital Bucharest celebrates its 557th anniversary on September 20. First mentioned as the „Citadel of București” in a document issued in 1459, the city soon became the court residence of the Wallachian Prince Vlad III the Impaler, best known around the world as Dracula. However, it was Mircea Ciobanul (Mircea the Shepherd) in the 16th century who erected what today became known as Curtea Veche (Old Court, today’s Old Bucharest City Center). Bucharest was established as the summer residence of Wallachian rulers before becoming the permanent location of the Wallachian court after 1698, starting with the reign of Constantn Brâncoveanu (1654 – 1714). Bucharest finally became capital of Romania in 1862. A wide range of events, including concerts, exhibitions, theater, and parades, were organised on the occasion between September 16 – 18 through the efforts of Bucharest municipality.
Romania’s Constitutional Court to rule on same-sex marriage recognition
Romania’s Constitutional Court is expected to issue its verdict in the case of a US-Romanian gay couple who got married in Belgium and seek legal recognition of their satus in Romania. The head of the country’s National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD) expressed his support for a positive verdict on Tuesday as he believed the ruling would have further implications for the rights of sexual minorities. Romania’s Civil Code does not legally recognise same-sex marriages between Romanian or foreign citizens officialised abroad.
