Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu met on Wednesday with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano, point at which it was decided to start the preparation of the third joint government meeting, which will aim to boost economic and political relations between Rome and Bucharest. The two diplomats have agreed to work together in the discussions on the future of the European Union, but also in the context in which Italy holds the presidency of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Romania and Italy recorded the highest level of trade in 2017, nearly 14 billion euros, said Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu. Also, Italian companies are the most numerous foreign companies in Romania. The Romanian minister assured his Italian counterpart that Romania will continue to participate in the efforts to manage the problem of illegal migration, at a time when Italy hosts a large number of migrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East. Viorica Dăncila was congratulated by colleagues in the European Parliament
The European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu welcomed President Klaus Iohannis’s decision to designate Viorica Dăncila as Romania’s prime minister, expressing hope for a good cooperation between the new cabinet and the European Commission. The leader of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament Gianni Pittella also congratulated Viorica Dăncila, but PMP Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Muresan states that Romania needs a prime minister to govern at the thought of citizens rather than party interests. „Our country is deepening even more in the political and economic crisis triggered by PSD and ALDE with Viorica Dăncila prime minister”, said Siegfried Muresan. In a press release, Member of the European Parliament Monica Macovei says that President Klaus Iohannis has not even tried to show a minimal resistance and to ask Liviu Dragnea another nomination for the post of prime minister.
