Defense Minister Mihai Fifor reaffirmed that Romania has fulfilled all its commitments to NATO
Defense Minister Mihai Fifor reaffirmed that Romania has fulfilled all its commitments to NATO. In the town of Timisoara he stressed, in the context, that the United States President’s request that other allied countries to allocate 2% of GDP for the army is justified: „At the moment”, said Mihai Fifor, „if I’m not wrong there are six states that fulfill this conditionality. Romania is one of these states. We are already in the second consecutive year with a 2% allocation of GDP. Not only does Romania allocate 2% of GDP, but it also fulfills the other two targets imposed by the North Atlantic Alliance, namely participation in the theaters of operations and I remind you that at the moment Romania has about 700 soldiers in the theater of operations in Afghanistan and attaining the capabilities which Romania has assumed by joining NATO, which are in a straight line and I refer here to the major programs of army endowment”. Statements by Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu
Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu announced that within a maximum of one month the analysis regarding the possible relocation of Romania’s Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem could be finalised. He specified that the analysis conducted on this issue will be presented to all political decision-makers, including President Klaus Iohannis. Also, he referred to the Palestinian ambassador to Romania being recalled as a natural thing and he hoped that diplomatic relations between the two countries will continue. „As far as we are concerned”, said Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, „we want our charge d’affaires in Ramallah to continue his activity. From my point of view, precisely at a time when there are many issues being discussed about Palestine, I believe an ambassador’s best contribution is to stay in the country where he is appointed and look for solutions, present arguments, because in the end they also have their arguments that we should take into account”.
