The President of Romania postponed the solemn ceremony to commemorate the victims of communism
Klaus Iohannis, President of Romania, has decided to postpone the solemn ceremony at Cotroceni Palace on 20 May, during which the year 2019 was to be declared the „Commemoration Year of the Victims of Communism”, 30 years after the Romanian Revolution in December 1989. The Presidential Administration states that Klaus Iohannis wants to eliminate any suspicion associating the Romanian Revolution with the electoral period. President Iohannis has always acted for the condemnation of the crimes and abuses of the repressive apparatus of the communist regime, as well as for commemorating the victims of totalitarianism.
BNR Governor Mugur Isărescu presented the quarterly report on inflation
The National Bank of Romania changed its inflation forecast for the next period, as rising from 3 to 4.2% by the end of this year, and from 3.1 to 3.3% by December 2020, against the background of a reversal of the previously descending inflation trend. The recent rising trend was determined by several factors, including an increase in the prices of vegetables and fruit, the increase of excise tax on tobacco products and the increase of the oil price on international markets, BNR Governor Mugur Isărescu announced in his report.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sends out the ballot papers to the Romanian diplomatic and consular missions for the May 26th elections
The Foreign Ministry in Romania has begun sending out the ballot papers to the diplomatic missions and the Romanian consular offices for the European Parliament elections and the National Referendum on 26 May. A total of 4,500,000 ballots will be sent for the 441 polling stations set up for Romanian voters living abroad, the largest number ever distributed to polling stations abroad. The number of ballot papers has been established as a result of the estimates made by the diplomatic missions and the territorial distribution of the Romanian communities abroad. Also, an assessment of the intention to vote after consultations with Romanians living abroad was also taken into account.
