President Klaus Iohannis has conveyed a message to mark the German unification
President Klaus Iohannis has said that Romania is a solid and reliable partner of Germany in Central and Eastern Europe and will also remain a close partner in fulfilling the goals of German Presidency at the European Union Council, to build up the European project. The Romanian head of state took part in an event organized at the German Embassy in Bucharest to mark 30 years since Germany’s reunification.
Klaus Iohannis: We appreciate the commitment and the contribution of the German Presidency at the European Union Council in cementing the European project. I assure you that you will continue to have a close partner in Romania in order to fulfill this goal. We need a united, prosper and safe Europe, which is closer to its citizens and better shaped globally.
Prime Minister Ludovic Orban has suspended Monday’s meetings after coming close to someone who tested positive for COVID-19
The Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban has suspended all his engagements scheduled for Monday, after one of the persons that he joined last week in a television studio has been tested positive for the new coronavirus. The prime minister has requested to be tested on Monday morning, though he had no symptoms, and the test result came back negative. However, Mr. Orban has suspended all in person meetings, according to the Government’s media office and will remain in quarantine until Thursday, when he will be tested again, 10 days after coming into contact with a positive case.
More than 1,500 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Romania in the last 24 hours
The Romanian authorities have reported 1.591 new coronavirus infections, out of more than 6,500 tests performed in the last 24 hours. This brigs the total number of cases to 137,000, since the pandemic started. Most of the new cases recorded in the last 24 hours were in the capital Bucharest – 562 and in the city of Iasi – 116. There were also 45 deaths due to COVID-19 and 592 patients are currently in intensive care.
Afghan and Indian migrants stopped at the border on route to Western Europe
20 citizens from Afghanistan and India were stopped by Romanian border police while illegally heading towards Western Europe. 18 of them were Afghans aged between 17 and 28. The driver of the vehicle they were in is accused of trafficking migrants. police also found two Indian citizens 300 meters from the border line in the county of Arad, walking towards Hungary. They entered Romania illegally on the basis os simple passports released by Indian authorities and residence permits in Bulgaria.
