Romania has recorded the highest number of COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic
Romania has registeredon Tuesday the highest number of COVID-19 associated deaths since the beginning of the pandemic – 213 in 24 hours. And the number of serious cases remains quite high, although there is a slight decrease for the second day in a row. 1,276 patients are admitted to Intensive Care Units. Also, more than 7,400 new infections were announced, out of 29,400 tests. The number of those who recovered has exceeded that of the new cases by more than 200. Most newly infected people are in Bucharest, almost 1,950.
The US Embassy in Romania has honoured three personalities with outstanding efforts against corruption
Today marks 15 years since the United Nations Convention against Corruption came into force. This year, for the first time, the United States Embassy in Bucharest honors three personalities in Romania who have made efforts to fight corruption in this country. They are the DNA prosecutor Adrian Matei, the journalist Emilia Sercan and the journalist and co-founder of RISE Project, Mihai Munteanu. The fight against corruption is one of the main themes of the strategic partnership between Romania and the United States and according to the American Embassy in Bucharest, the people hounoured on Wednesday have made special efforts and went through many personal challenges to expose and prosecute cases of corruption. DNA prosecutor Adrian Matei is the one who secured the prison sentence for corruption for one of the most powerful civil servants in Romania, the former president of PSD, Liviu Dragnea. The journalist Emilia Sercan generated changes for the better in the procedures for granting doctoral degrees, helping to rebuild trust in academic institutions, by means of her disclosures about high-ranking civil servants, including cabinet members who obtained doctoral degrees based on plagiarized thesis. The third person nominated by the American Embassy for the title of anti-corruption champion in Romania is the journalist and co-founder of Rise Project, Mihai Munteanu, who exposed numerous cases of bribery, political corruption, money laundering, organized crime and human trafficking.
Agreement Romania and the United States on cooperation for nuclear-energy projects
The agreement between Romania and the United States on cooperation for nuclear-energy projects in Cernavoda was signed today at Victoria Palace by Economy Minister Virgil Popescu and US Ambassador Adrian Zuckerman, in the presence of interim Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca. The terms of the document were set in early October by the visiting economy minister in the United States. On the occasion of signing the agreement, the Romanian and the American side also discussed the collaboration within the Romania-United States Strategic Partnership in political, military, energy and economic areas.
