The Brazilian variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Romania
Two cases of infection with the Brazilian variant of the coronavirus have been confirmed in the Romanian capital, Bucharest. The Brazilian strain was found in the samples taken from two men aged 38 and 57, respectively, who presented COVID-19 symptoms and who also have other illnesses. The first of them has no travel history and is not aware of having been in contact with an infected person. The second comes from a community outbreak of three cases, with one of his co-workers as the possible source of infection. An epidemiological enquiry is under way.
Rapid increase in the number of daily COVID-19 cases in Romania
The Romanian authorities have reported a rapid increase in the number of new daily COVID-19 infections. One in seven Romanians tested in the last 24 hours has had a positive COVID-19 result. On Tuesday, the authorities have reported another 4,989 cases out of less than 36,000 tests performed since yesterday. Most new case were reported in the capital Bucharest – 743. There were also 93 new deaths and 1.126 patients are currently receiving treatment in Intensive Care Units. The capital and four counties are in the red scenario due to the high number of coronavirus cases.
Eurostat: Romania has has the highest economic growth in the last quarter of 2020
Romania has recorded the highest economic growth in the European Union in the fourth quarter of 2020 – 4.8%, compared to the previous quarter, according to date published by Eurostat on Tuesday. On the same list, the country is followed by Malta, Croatia and Greece. On the other hand, the economy of the Euro zone has contracted by 0.7%, while the European Union as a whole has seen an economic decline of 0,5%. The largest declines were experienced by Ireland, Austria, Italy and France. Nevertheless, the Gross Domestic Product in the Euro zone has fallen by 6.6% in 2020, a smaller contraction than previously predicted./mbrotacel
