Rise in new infections with the Delta variant of COVID-19
The number of new infections with COVID-19 has almost reached 100 today, for the first time in the last month, and the evolution of the epidemic in Romania is, again on an ascending trend. Approximately 100 infections with the highly infectious Delta variant have been found so far, the authorities announce. This is the variant that has already caused a new wave of infections in several countries in Europe. For Romania, specialists estimate that less than half of the population benefit from a level of anti-coronavirus protection, said dr. Valeriu Gheorghiţă, coordinator of the vaccination campaign.
Valeriu Ghoerghiţă: On a national level, the proportion of the population with some kind of protection against COVID-19, obtained through sickness or vaccination, is of about 44%. There are, of course, differences between districts. There are two districts: Cluj and Ilfov, as well as the Municipality of Bucharest, with an immunization rate over 60%. Vaccines, at this moment, are very efficient against severe forms, against hospitalization. Of course, we don’t talk about 100%, but complete vaccination substantially reduces the risk of hospitalization and death. At this moment, in Great Britain, because it is an example for everybody, the amplitude of this fourth wave is of almost two thirds of the last wave, bat, if we look at hospitalization and deaths, only 10% of the confirmed cases are hospitalized at this moment, compared to what was happening in the previous wave and the mortality rate is of only 3%, compared to the previous wave.
