The Acting Health Minister in Romania is asking for support from the European Health Commissioner to cope with the pandemic situation in Romania
The Romanian Acting Health Minister, Cseke Attila, has on Wednesday appealed for support from the European Health Commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, in order to speed the supply of Tocilizumab to the country. The medicine is used to treat patients with severe forms of COVID-19. The minister also asked for medical teams designed to support Romanian front line doctors for limited periods of time. On Thursday, Mr. Attila had a similar discussion with his Polish counterpart, who gave assurances that Poland would consider offering medical help to Romania.
Romania has recorded more than 17,000 new COVID-19 cases and 423 new deaths
On Wednesday, the Romanian authorities have reported 17,158 new cases of infection with the coronavirus, out of more than 73,000 tests performed in the last 24 hours. Most new infections are in the capital Bucharest – 2,843. There were also 423 deaths attributed to COVID-19, less than Tuesday, when Romania has hit a record high of almost 600 deaths. The pressure on Intensive Care Units continue to be high, with 1799 patients admitted and 39 of them are children.
The American Defense Secretary is on an official visit to Romania
Stability and security in the Black Sea Region are in the United States national interest, the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said on Wednesday, while on an official visit to Bucharest, where he met his Romanian counterpart, Nicolae Ciuca. They talked about the consolidation of cooperation between allies in order to deter Russia’s adverse actions in the region. Mr. Austin has said that the US would continue to offer assistance to increase the maritime capabilities in several countries, including Romania.
Lloyd Austin: Security and stability in the Black Sea region are in the national interest of the United States. The vulnerability in face of Russia’s aggression is obvious and we have seen that in its actions in Eastern Ukraine. We will continue to work with our partners in the area.
The Romanian Defense Minister, Nicolae Ciuca, has spoken about the strategic partnership with the United States as a fundamental pillar for Romania’s security and defense. He also mentioned that along with his counterpart they have identified common grounds related to NATO’s adjustment to current challenges.
