Romanian foreign minister at a meeting in Brussels
Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu is in Brussles joining his EU counterparts in a meeting on recent developments on security in neighbouring Ukraine and the Black Sea region. The security of the EU’s eastern border will be discussed in the light of current high tensions with Russia. Ministers are also expecteed to meet Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba while reaffirming the EU’s full support for Ukraine, its independence and territorial integrity. Mr Aurescu will express his support for continuing efforts designed to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis, according to a statement of Romania’s Foreign Ministry. However, the EU is not expected to impose sanctions on Russia just yet, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday as he rebuffed calls from Kyiv to take such steps.
Mayor of Bucharest sector 3 under DNA investigation
The mayor of sector 3 in the Romanian capital Bucharest is under DNA investigation along with other eight people in his office and the Rosal Group company for an estimated RON 578 million fraud in connection with a sanitation contract. Robert Negoiță is accused of abuse of office. The fraud relates to events in 2000 – 2018 in Bucharest sector 3 where 54 contracts were signed for a sanitation contract with Rosal Group. Romania’s anticorruption watchdog, the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), said a contract in 1999 was successifully extended with Rosal without public tenders, Radio Romania reported.
Felix Klieser at Romanian Radio Concert Hall
Romania’s Radio Concert Hall will host a performance on Wednesday, February 23, of Felix Klieser, a well-known German horn player. Klieser will perform Richard Strauss’ Concert 1 in E-flat Major accompanied by the Radio Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu. Klieser was born without arms. His French horn sits on a stand, and he uses his right foot to move in and out of the bell of the instrument, and his left foot to press the valves and change the notes. Klieser performed with Simon Rattle and has taken part in Sting’s world tour. He is the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s artist in residence for 20021/2022 concert season, having made his debut in November last year.
Romania coronavirus updates
Romania reported 7,694 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, which is 7 cases more than previous day, with 85 deaths (52 men, 33 women), and another 1,101 people under intensive care (3 less than previous day). In the capital Bucharest, the number of cases hit 2,170, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GSC). With its 2,170 cases reported, Bucharest still leads amomg other regions in the country, followed by north-western county of Cluj (463 cases), central county of Sibiu (299 cases), and south-eastern county of Constantza (288 cases).
