Romania celebrates its Army Day
Romania is celebrating its Army Day on Tuesday. A military and religious ceremony is expected at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Carol I (Charles I) Park in the capital Bucharest. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă were expected to attend the event. Wreath-laying ceremonies are also taking place in the north-western town of Satu Mare but also in Păuliș and Carei at Romanian soldiers’ memorials. President Iohannis addressed the nation in a statement broadcast live by Radio Romania when he reiterated Romania’s will to increase its defence budget at 2.5 percent next year.
Romania’s CSAT meeting called by President Klaus Iohannis
Romania’s Supreme National Defence Council (CSAT) is expected to meet on Tuesday following a call by the country’s President Klaus Iohannis at the Presidential Cotroceni Palace in the capital Bucharest. The agenda would include security issues in the region following Russia’s aggression in neighbouring Ukraine. Talks will also include the country’s efforts to improve its energy situation. Romania’s government was among the first among EU Member States to react as energy prices started to rise. Even before the Ukraine war began, Bucharest last November launched a subsidy scheme to shield one of EU’s poorest populations from their impact.
Meridian Trade Union protests in Bucharest
Meridian National Trade Union Confederation organised a protest on Tuesday before Romanian government’s headquarters at Victoria Palace in capital Bucharest. Protesters expressed their support of increased minimum salary, compliance with collective labour contracts and respect of a law already adopted in parliament in this respect. Participants in the protests include farmers, miners, soldiers, police, health workers and airport staff.
