Romanian President Iohannis condemns terror attacks in Israel
Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis has strongly condemned recent terror attacks in Israel. “Romania expresses its unconditional support of Israel’s legitimate right to self-defence”, Mr. Iohannis told a videoconference of the European Council in Brussels on Tuesday. In the light of Hamas’ terror attacks against Israel, President Charles Michel convened an extraordinary European Council meeting by video conference. “It is of utmost importance that the European Council, in line with Treaties and our values, sets our commom position and establishes a clear unified course of action that reflects the complexity of the unfolding situation”, Mr. Michel said in a statement.
Romanian Prime Minister on a visit to Ukraine
Romania’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Romanian government officials are visiting the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Wednesday. The Romanian officials are expected to meet their Ukrainian counterparts for talks concerning their country’s support at a time when Ukraine retained the initiative in the war but their advance was poor during the peak of their summer offensive. Ukrainian military progress is still possible but the United States and their Western allies need to provide sustained military aid. Prime Minister Ciolacu is also expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of his visit. Mr. Ciolacu met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Tuesday. The Romanian delegation also included Foreign Minister Angel Tîlvar and other high-ranking officials. Mr. Ciolacu was the first world leader to visit Israel since the start of the war with Hamas militants.
A blast in northern Romania injures 9 people
An explosion of a grenade in Romania’s northern county of Sălaj injured nine people on Wednesday. The blast was reported at a military training camp in Crasna, a town in Sălaj county. Three ambulances, a helicopter of Romania’s SMURD emergency services and another emergency vehicule went to the scene as all nine victims were rushed to a near-by hospital. The blast happened during an exercise at the camp where troops were trained to ensure a safe manual handling.of such devices.
