Addictions of any kind are insufficiently addressed on the public and political agenda in Romania
Addictions of any kind are insufficiently addressed on the public and political agenda in Romania, according to a new report published today. Doctor Eugen Hriscu, a specialist in preventing and treatment of addictions, warned that one of the major issues faced by the health system is the absence of specialists.
Eugen Hriscu: We have been in this situation for 15 years now, of pleading to the health ministry to sign an order to allow doctors to obtain an accredited form of study to be able to treat people with addictions, because now we don’t have that. Only this year, with great pressure, the health ministry agreed to sign this order. But 15 years in which we could have formed doctors have been lost. There are very strong barriers in the way the health ministry and the health system work. It is a very heavy structure when it comes to responding to people’s needs. And, so far, this hasn’t happened concerning drug consumption and drug addiction.
Romania is still the country with the highest number of lethal road accidents in the European Union
Romania is still the country with the highest number of lethal road accidents in the European Union. The main causes of the accidents are not respecting traffic rules and the poor road infrastructure. Robert Cazanciuc, vice-president of the Senate and initiator of the Anatasia law, that drastically punishes drivers under the influence of alcohol or narcotic who cause accidents, suggests an expansion of the interdiction to drive for 10 years for those who break the law, no matter if they caused an accident or not.
Robert Cazanciuc: I think it will have a pretty important discouraging effect and I am convinced that it will obtain an unanimous vote. We still need defensive driving as a form of education. Titi Aur has told me some things that I just didn’t know and that can simply lead to saving lives. It is therefore important to have this instrument too and a normative act meant to promote this defensive driving passed the Senate and is now at the Chamber of Deputies./aionita
