Romania has reconfirmed its commitment to ensure transit of millions of tons of Ukrainian grains every month
Romania has reconfirmed its commitment to ensure the transit of at least four million tons of grain monthly from Ukraine on Friday, and this becomes possible as of Friday after the implementation of a project related to navigation at night on the Sulina channel, the Minister of Transport Sorin Grindeanu announced at a press conference in Tulcea. He took part in a meeting concerning the steps taken for the transport of Ukrainian grain from Romania, attended by oficials from Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, the United States and the European Union. The meeting in Tulcea brought together authorities from all decision-making levels at the national level, and the press conference held at the end of the working group meeting was also attended by Kathleen Kavalec, the United States ambassador to Romania. Members of the Working Group have presented the achievements of the six meetings held so far and the most important of these achievements is the increase in grain exports from Ukraine to three million tons per month. The volume will rise to four million, as navigation on the Sulina canal is also possible at night. However, there are still challenges for the next period, the Transport Minister has underlined.
Sorin Grindeanu: In the next period, we will operationalize this PRIMUS program – that means 24-hour navigability, which is extremely important. We have all the equipment, we are training the staff and that is the first point. Second: the Constanța port tenders for equipment should be completed sometime in early February, because we are talking about several tenders that also help to increase this capacity. That would be the second target we need to hit by the next meeting.

The IMF reccomends that Romania should bring additional revenues to its budget
The International Monetary Fund has recommended new measures to Romania to bring additional revenues to the budget in the amount of 2% of the Gross Domestic Product. Experts argue that tax reform should target value added tax and income taxes paid by individuals, by eliminating tax exemptions and privileges. The IMF recommends that after these measures are enforced, the reintroduction of the progressive tax should also be considered. Also, the new turnover tax should be reconsidered, because it is not in line with good practices, according to the conclusions of the IMF evaluation on the Romanian economy.
