New earthquake in eastern Romania
An earthquake of moderate magnitude was reported in eastern Romania on Wednesday. The earthquake of 4.0 on Richter scale was reported in the county of Buzău, in eastern Romania at 12.53 local time. The quake had a moderate depth of 110 km with no damages reported in the area. Romania reported some 21 earthquakes earlier in May of magnitudes between 2.1 – 4.1 on Richter scale.
Smallest Room, Romania’s Save the Children campaign
As Romania is struggling to keep its premature children alive, almost six babies out of 1,000 do not make it to the age of one. Launched by Romania’s Save the Children humanitarian organisation, Smallest Room campaign is designed to help 10 intensive care and pediatric centres in providing incubators – an apparatus used to provide protection of premature or sick babies. According to EU centralised data, Romania is second only to Bulgaria in terms of infant mortality. At the opposite pole, lowest infant mortality was recorded in Sweden, Finland, and Slovenia.
Romanian stage and film star Costel Constantin dies at 81
Costel Constantin, a well-known star of Romania’s stage and film, has died in Bucharest on Wednesday. He was 81. A graduate of the Romanian I.L. Caragiale Theatre and Film National University in 1966, Constantin was born in Galați, a Danube port in eastern Romania, on October 20, 1942. After a short presence at the National Theatre of Iassy, he then came to Bucharest where he joined the team of the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre under the directorate of Radu Beligan. His theatre repertoire included starring roles in Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, William Shakespeare’s King Lear, the title role in Barbu Delavraancea’s history drama The Sunset, and many others. Constantin’s last appearence was in Victor Eftimiu’s comedy The Man Who Met Death. Also a star in tens of films, Costel Constantin’s filmography included such titles as The Blue Gates of the Town, Ion – The Curse of Earth and Love, Lucian Pintilie’s Why Are They Ringing the Bells, Mitică? and many others.
