55 children were abandoned in maternity hospitals and other health facilities in the first quarter of this year, 53 fewer than in the same period in 2023, according to the National Authority for the Protection of Children’s Rights and Adoption. Of these, 42 children were abandoned in maternity wards and 13 in pediatric wards. On the other hand, in the first three months of 2024, 50 abandoned children were discharged from health facilities. Of these, three returned to their families, four were placed with families or individuals and 39 with foster carers. At the same time, one child was sent to a residential service, two were placed in emergency reception centers, and one is found in other situations, according to the data made public by the authorities.

More than 400 foreign citizens have been admitted to the Foreigners’ Accommodation Center in Arad County, in recent months, until the completion of the procedures for their return to the countries of origin. Most of the migrants entered Romania legally, later being detected when they tried to fraudulently cross the western border, which led to the revocation of their right of residence.
Among the foreigners who were ordered to be taken into public custody, most are from Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, says Chief Commissioner Filimon Pâtea.
Chief Commissioner Filimon Pâtea: From the checks carried out by the immigration police, it emerged that most of the foreigners entered Romania legally for the purpose of employment, later being detected in an attempt to fraudulently cross the state border. In this context, their right of residence was revoked in the name of foreigners, and escorted return decisions were issued.
In all cases where foreigners were brought into the public custody center upon exiting Romania, the measure was ordered to prohibit entry into the territory of the member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation for periods between 6 months and 5 years.

Data published today by the National Institute of Statistics indicate that approximately 5.8 million people have been registered in accommodation units since the beginning of the year, of which almost 20% are foreigners. More than 11 million nights slept in tourist reception structures were reported in the first six months of this year, up by about 3% compared to the same period last year. The average length of stay was two days for Romanian tourists and slightly longer for foreigners. Most foreign tourist arrivals were from Germany, over 100,000, followed by Italy and the United States.
