Romanian authorities add extra accommodation for immigrants

The Romanian General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) will increase the number of accommodation places for immigrants, which will be operational this year. The IGI has increased the capacity of the accommodation center for foreigners taken into public custody in Horia, Arad County. The center will be operational soon, said Chief Commissioner Filimon Pîtea. „The total capacity of the center will reach 400 places. We currently have 160 places operational. The building that you have seen at the entrance, which contains 240 places, will have the same destination for the accommodation of foreigners who will be taken into public custody and will be operationalized this year,” said Filimon Pȋtea. Apart from the accommodation center for foreigners in Horia, IGI also has a similar facility in Otopeni, near Bucharest. The occupancy rate of the center usually varies from one period to another. Usually during the summer season, occupancy is higher. At the moment, as Filimon Pîtea said, the occupancy rate is only 21%, which is relatively low considering the number of migrants caught almost every day by the Romanian Border Police at Romania’s border with Hungary.

Criminal case against a man who illegally hide hazardous materials on his land

Officers from the Weapons, Explosives and Dangerous Substances Service (SAESP) in Romania have opened criminal proceedings against a 57-year-old man from Galati, in south-east of the country, on whose land over 7,500 tons of waste, some of it hazardous, were found illegally dumped. The waste from demolition and masonry work consisted of rubble, paints, thinners and asbestos, which is considered extremely dangerous for the environment and potentially carcinogenic to humans. Police action caught on the spot a van from which two people were unloading bags of inert waste. The action was carried out in cooperation with the Galati Environmental Guard. According to Ionuț Bejan, chief commissioner of the Galati Environment Guard, the owner of the land was fined a total of 21,000 lei. In addition, the Galati Environmental Guard ordered that, within 30 days, the owner must sanitize and ecologize the land in question, according to the legislation in force. The police investigations are continuing within the criminal case file under the criminal offense of keeping, storing and/or hiding waste outside authorized premises, provided for by Emergency Ordinance 92/2021 on waste regime. In another case, two shipments of products declared as second-hand on entering the country, totaling 17 tons, turned out to be waste brought from Germany and France, so the authorities in Arad turned them back. The two trucks were checked at the Nădlac 2 border crossing point and were driven by Romanian drivers. They did not have documents to bring waste into the country, so both trucks were ordered to be returned to the consignors.
