St Paraskeva celebrations in Romania’s north-eastern city of Iassy
Celebrations are taking place of the Holy Liturgy in memory of Saint Paraskeva on Monday with thousands of people expected to attend. Worshippers would also include leading politicians including Marcel Ciolacu, Prime Ministrer and leader of Romania’s center-left Social Democrat Party (PSD), Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă, President of the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), Elena Lasconi, presidential candidate of the center-right Save Romania Union (USR), and former NATO vicepresident Mircea Geoană, also a presidential candidate. Thousands of worshipers are coming each year to attend ceremonies celebrating Saint Pious Paraskeva when Romania’s north-eastern city of Iassy turns into the largest pilgrimage center in the country and the fifth such center in Europe. Days before the St. Paraskeva holiday, the city of Iassy has been filled with people. Every year, worshippers queue at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iassy where relics of St. Paraskeva can be found.
Gas prices surge in Romania
The average price of a liter of gas in Romania went up by 1.7 pecent from last month while a liter of diesel fuel grew by 1 percent. In capital Bucharest, standard gas prices balance between RON 7.5 and RON 7.17 while standard diesel prices are between RON 7.9 and RON 7.19. Romania tops seven among EU countries with cheapest gas prices, and eight among lowest diesel prices.
Romania’s Parliament building goes blue on October 18
Romania’s Parliament building will go blue on October 18, between 7 – 11 PM, according to a decision issued by the parliaments’s lower house on Monday. The event is expected to mark the European Day of Fight against Human Trafficking. Romania’s House of Deputies has approved the measure following a request put forward by Oana Țoiu, a deputy of the opposition center-right Save Romania Union (USR), and social-democrat Florin Manole – both vicepresidents of Romanian Parliament’s lower house. The government of Romania did not fully meet the minimum standards in the field but it was making significant efforts to do so, according to a US State Departmeent report issued in 2023.
