The victims of the fire in the Colectiv club were commemorated in Bucharest

In Bucharest, the victims of the fire in the Colectiv club, nine years ago, were commemorated on Wednesday evening. 65 people died in the evening of October 30, 2015 and in the following period, in hospitals, due to burns and smoke poisoning. The club operated in a hall of the former Pionierul factory. The fireworks used during the concert ignited the sponge used for the soundproofing of the venue, and the fire spread quickly. There were 400 people in the club, and the exit was through a single door. The protests triggered after the tragedy brought into question corruption and irregularities in the institutions that should have checked the safety conditions in clubs and other public spaces. The government at the time resigned. Inquiries were opened to investigate the responsibility of the owners of the club and the local authorities; several people were convicted. Last night, photos of the deceased were placed in front of the building, relatives and friends of the victims brought candles and flowers. The government sent a message of compassion for all those who suffered or lost a loved one in the tragedy that still marks Romanian society today – nine years later.
