Romania’s center-left PSD about to win elections
Romania’s governing center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) is expected to win parliamentary elections against far-right parties. Following the results, the country’s next government would include a pro-western coalition led by the PSD. Three far-right nationalist parties made also big gains, with the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and two other parties of the kind winning more than 30 percent of the vote. As independent far-right candidate Călin Georgescu emerged as front-runner in presidential elections last Sunday, elections for parliament took place against the backdrop of a vote recount.
Breaches of election law reported
Romanian police reported 343 cases of election-related crimes with half of them confirmed. Some other 30 cases are still under investigation, Romania’s Home Ministry spokeswoman Monica Dajbog said in a statement on Monday. Half of them were confirmed and some 50 fines of RON 160,000 were also reported. Warning were also issued against 78 people. However, such events are not likely to affect the election process, the ministry pointed out. Romanian authorities say they have found evidence of meddling in election campaign by hostile players, with the country’s top court still expected to validate results. Parliament elections in Romania were held according to law with public safety ensured, the ministry said.
