Official visit to Romania by NATO Deputy Secretary General, Rose Gottemoeller
The new Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Rose Gottemoeller, will support Romania on its path towards achieving the goals set out during this summer’s summit in Warsaw, the Romanian Foreign Minister, Lazar Comanescu, said, after meeting the NATO official. On the first official visit by Ms. Gottemoeller to Romania, she and Mr. Comanescu have talked about bolstering stability in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, an area that brings most of the security challenges.
Lazar Comanescu: We have had the same assessments on how important it is to build up the Alliance’s presence in our area and to pay higher attention to the southern structure of the eastern flank of NATO, because this is the area where most of security and stability challenges come from, as we could see.
The Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Rose Gottemoeller, has appreciated Romania’s contribution to the Afghanistan missions in recent years, as Romania took part in some important missions, in very dangerous areas. Rose Gottemoeller has also spoken about the anti-missile system in Deveselu and the fact that Romania has activated a multinational division in the South-Eastern command of the Alliance.
Public debate on the abolishment of the Public Radio and Television fee
A debate on the removal of the license fee for Public Radio and Television and the impact of such a measure on the mission of the two public institutions will take place on Thursday, at The National Library in Bucharest, with the participation of President Klaus Iohannis. The meeting, organized by the Active Watch Association, with the support of the Presidential Administration, is designed to ensure a dialogue between the President and journalists, as well as representatives of the media organizations and the civil society, about the situation of Public Radio and Television, especially after the Parliament’s decision to abolish more than 100 taxes, including the radio and television fee. President Iohannis has previously said that he would not make a decision to sign this law, before he sets up public debates with relevant specialists and representatives of the civil society, on the implications that the removal of the fee would have.
The plenary summit of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance is unfolding in the Romanian city of Iasi
More than 200 experts in over 40 countries are taking part in the annual plenary summit of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, in the Romanian city of Iasi. In a four-day summit, the participants will analyze the relevance of the education, research and remembrance of the Holocaust as defining elements in shaping and enforcing the modern policy. Romania holds the 2016 Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, and the city of Iasi was chosen to host this summit, as it marks 75 years since the Iasi Pogrom, a tragic event of national history, assumed by central and local authorities.
