Updated tally of COVID-19 cases in Romania
Romania has reported more than 1,600 cases of new coronavirus infections, out of more than 25,000 tests performed in the last 24 hours. Authorities have reported 1,629 new infections, and Bucharest remains the area with the highest number of cases – 210. The county of Buzau has topped 100 new cases, while in Prahova, there were 87 new infections on Friday. Vrancea is the county with the lowest number of infections, with only five reported on Friday. The daily number of deaths due to coronavirus is still high, with 42 new fatalities on Friday, to a total of 4,633. The number of patients admitted to intensive care has also risen, to 508 out of more than 7,200 people hospitalized with coronavirus.
State aid for regional airports in Iasi, Bacau, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova and Sibiu
The Romanian Government has approved a state aid package to support the activity of regional airports in Iasi, Bacau, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova and Sibiu, amid the economic hardship triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. A government official, Ionel Danca, has announced on Friday at Victoria Palace that the state aid will be given to regional airports with a traffic of 200,000 to one million passengers a year. He added that the budget assigned for that plan was over 22 million lei.
Romanians are choosing their local administrations for the next four years
Romanians will choose their mayors, local and county councilors for the next four years on Sunday. Because of the coronavirus outbreak, voters will have to wear masks, disinfect their hands and keep a social distance in the voting stations. Today is the last day of electoral campaign which is due to end on Saturday, at 7am. As of Friday morning, campaign events are no longer reflected in the audiovisual media. The campaign was held in strict conditions of sanitary security. Authorities have guaranteed that all measures are in place to prevent the transmission of the virus among voters.
