Second semester of school year starts in Romania
The second semester of the school year starts on Monday, February 8, in Romania after one week break. The new semester is an opportunity for a fresh start for both students and teachers. Students can build on their previous learnings but they may also need to re-evaluate and readjust based upon lessons already learned. The second semester of the 2020 – 2021 school year will include 17 weeks of courses. However, the situation in each community is taken into account with strict measures enforced. The so-called ‘green scenario’ refers to cases when all children can go to school as coronavirus figures are low. According to a ‘red scenario’, only kindergarten and I-IV grade children can go to school while older children will attend further online courses. In communities still under strict lockdown, everyone stays at home for further online lessons.
‘Collective’, honoured as best documentary in London
Nominated in three categories, ‘Collective’, a Romanian film directed by Alexander Nanau, won the Best Documentary award at a gala of the Film Critics Circle in London on Sunday. Directed, written, produced and edited by Alexander Nanau, the film premiered out of competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival in September 2019. The film also received the Best European Documentary Award, becoming first ever Romanian film to achieve that feat. Furthermore, the film was selected as the Romanian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 93rd edition of the Oscars. The film tells the story of a group of investigative journalists at a Romanian newspaper in their attempt of uncovering public healthcare fraud, corruption and maladministration.
Romania coronavirus updates
Romania reported 1,319 new coronavirus cases on Monday with 80 deaths (44 men, 36 women) and 958 people under intensive care. In the capital Bucharest, the number of new cases hit 47, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GCS). The Romanian capital is followed by the western county of Timiș (25 cases), and the south-eastern county of Constantza (24 cases).
