Holy Cross Day in Romania
Romanain Christians along with Christians all over the world celebrate the Holy Cross Day, a feast on Septembr 14 to honour the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. In Christian Orthodox churches the feast dates back to the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (the site of Christ’s tomb) in Jerusalem. It was adopted by the Roman Catholic Church in the 7th century and is also observed in Protestant traditions. The feast is a celebration and commemoration of God’s greatest work: His death on the Cross and His Resurrection through which death was defeated and the doors to Heaven opened.
Former Romanian MP goes to prison
A former Romanian MP got a three-year prison term on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in the so-called ‘Giga TV file’. An appeal court in the capital Bucharest found that Viorel Hrebenciuc, a former leading MP of the opposition Social Democrat Party (PSD), was involved in a major corruption case in connection with the former Giga TV channel. Also involved in the case, Gheorghe Ștefan, known as ‘Pinalti’, a former mayor of the north-eastern town of Piatra Neamț, Laura Corina Georgescu, former head of the CNA (Romania’s audio-visual regulator) and Narcisa Iorga, another CNA member, received jail terms. The ruling is final. The DNA sent Hrebenciuc, Ștefan, Geeorgescu, and Iorga to court in 2015.
Romania coronavirus updates
Romania reported 3,929 news cases on Tuesday, with 96 deaths (55 men, 41 women), and other 10 people under intensive care. In the capital Bucharest, the number of cases hit 459, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GCS). With the cases reported, the Romanian capital leads among other regions across the country followed by the north-eastern county of Suceava with 215 cases, western county of Timiș with 167 cases, and the north-western county of Maramureș with 155 cases.
