EU minimum wage under public debate in Romania
A project concerning EU minimum wage is under debate in Romania, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Thursday. “As elections already become an event of the past, we must return to Romania’s priorities”, Mr Ciolacu said. The prime minister also thanked his ministers for their efforts of keeping the Cabinet moves out of Romania’s election campaign. Since 2007, gross minimum wages in Romania have constantly increased. As of 2024, the gross minimum wage peaked at RON 3,300. The growth rate of the gross minimum wage has changed over the years while the rate increased significantly in the past two years.
Romania’s inflation rate goes down
Romania’s annual inflation rate edged lower to 5.1% in May 2024 from 5.9% in the previous month. It was the lowest reading since July 2021, as prices moderated for food, non-food products and services. However, prices of footwear, furniture, cleaning products and services went up recently. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu believes the policies of his center-left Social Democrat Party (PSD) allowed the trend. Inflation rate in Romania will hit 3.5 percent by the end of 2025, however slower according to previous estimates, with National Bank (BNR) governor Mugut Isărescu saying that BNR would persue a balance designed to prevent inflation or recession.
Romania celebrates the Ascension of Jesus Christ
Romanian Christian-Orthodox worshipers celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ on Thursday – a day commemorating the Christian belief of the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. Ascension is one of the twelve Great Feasts of Orthodox liturgical year. Christ made his last appearance on earth forty days after his Resurrection from the dead. Jesus had told His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them and for all believers.
