Romanian Government supports farmers and infrastructure projects

The Romanian government adopted on Wednesday a set of government decisions allocating additional funds to support agricultural producers, local communities and the continuation of infrastructure investment projects. Farmers whose crops have been affected by the drought will be supported by the government to compensate for losses. The budget of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will be supplemented by 2 billion lei from the budget reserve fund. This form of support will benefit more than 230,000 farmers whose crops of wheat, barley, rape, maize, peas, sunflowers, soybeans, vines, fruit trees were affected by the drought from September 2023 last year to August 2024 this year, and more than 17,000 farmers will receive support in the form of reduced costs for diesel fuel used in agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture will receive an additional more than 192 million lei, so that the total amount allocated for diesel subsidy payments will reach 462.5 million lei for 2024. The Romanian government has also decided to allocate about 560 million lei to county councils and municipal councils to finance social services in the child protection system, protective measures such as day care centers and residential centers for adults with disabilities, homes for the elderly and the operating expenses of home care units for the elderly. „We are approving 540 million to pay for work on projects funded by the NRRP. The National Construction Program is also receiving 300 million lei to pay for works already carried out,” added Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.

Romania sends 50 firefighters and firefighting equipment to Greece

Romania will once again support Greece by sending 50 firefighters and firefighting equipment specialized in fighting forest fires. The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Committee for Emergency Situations (CNSU) convened by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. Rescue teams from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) will move by land to Greece as soon as possible. Croatia and Italy have decided to send three specialized fire-fighting planes to Greece, after Athens requested help from EU countries. The planes will help bring the rapidly spreading fires in the northern Peloponnese under control, according to an announcement by the European commission. This is the third time Greece has asked other EU countries for help in the current forest and vegetation fire season. Following the first two appeals, European countries sent five planes, two helicopters, 115 fire engines and 348 firefighters to Greece.

Romanian Senators voted May 31 – National Drug Awareness Day

The Romanian Senate adopted, by unanimous vote, the legislative initiative to establish May 31 as the National Drug Awareness Day. The draft aims to combat misinformation and signal health risks. The initiators emphasize the importance of discussing the dangers of drug use and identifying the best solutions to prevent and combat the phenomenon. „In this battle, especially to protect young people, there are three main pillars: education, prevention, treatment and punishment. The most important pillar is education,” said Robert Cazanciuc, Vice-President of the Senate.
