Romania’s minimum wage to rise from January 2025

Romania’s minimum wage is expected to rise in January 1 from RON 3,700 to RON 4,050 (a RON 350 high), following talks between government officials, business and trade union leaders. The plan put forward by the country’s Labour Ministry was under public debate and could come into force at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The last minimum pay rise was approved on July 1, this year. More than 1,800,000 employees will see their monthly pay increase including those in the private sector. The move will allow Romania to align with EU directives requiring member states to take action to ensure statutory minimum wages allowing decent living standards.

Bucharest opens its Christmas Markets

The Bucharest City Hall is expected to officially open its Christmas Market in the Constitution Plaza on Friday (November 29) when the Christmas lights will also deck out the boulevards of the capital. Organised by Bucharest’s Sector 6 City Hall, a so-called West Side City Market will open in the capital’s Drumul Taberei neighbourhood tomorrow, on November 28. Every year at this time, the Christmas lights in Bucharest are a major attraction for tourists and people of Bucharest as such markets are also expected to host concerts and shows.

Home Alone… in concert

Hollywood’s famous Home Alone movie will be back at the Palace Hall in the capital Bucharest on Sunday, December 1 with an orchestra playing live John Williams’ music. Romania’s Radio National Orchestra and the Radio Academic Choir are expected to play live the Home Alone music for the first time with Stefan Geiger as conductor. Macauley Culkin played Kevin, a young boy who defended his home from robbers after his family accidentaly left him behind on their Christmas vacation to Paris. Macauley Culkin received an American Comedy Award as funniest actor in a motion picture, and the Chicago Film Critics Association’s Award as Most Promising Actor.
